Hailed as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers” (Loudmouth), Dr Steve Barry is a Sydney-based pianist, composer, educator, and the Program Leader for Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His 2023 album In The Waves featured Eric Harland (USA) and Will Vinson (USA/UK) and was praised by the Sydney Morning Herald as “…the finest instalment to date of the pianist’s bristling musical intelligence, rhythmic mutability, melodic flair and compositional gifts.”
Barry’s Hammond trio is rooted in the spirit of soul jazz and amplified by influences from Brazil to Blake Mills and Béla Bartók. The band weaves lyrical melodicism with a modern harmonic sensibility, all underpinned by the liquid, intuitive rapport of the trio format.
