In addition to his work as a leader, he has performed with a wide range of artists, from straightahead jazz stars to R&B legends to Avant-Garde innovators to Brazilian masters – including road tours with Brother Jack McDuff and Bill Doggett, performances with Dr. Lonnie Smith and Charles Earland, concerts with George Garzone, Billy Harper, Sheila Jordan, Larry Coryell, Reggie Workman, and his former students Robert Glasper and Becca Stevens, and being an early MBASE member of Steve Coleman’s group with Geri Allen and Cassandra Wilson.
In 2025, Rory did four days of recording original music that he is preparing for release, which featured different groups that included drummers Kweku Sumbry, Colin Stranahan, and Obed Calvaire, bassists Matt Penman, Eric Wheeler, and Jaromir Honzak, pianists Marc Copland, Helen Sung, and Micah Thomas, and saxophonist John Ellis and trumpeter Jason Palmer.
Rory is also an acclaimed educator who “has taken so many young people to a new level that he has influenced a whole generation of jazz!” (Rachel Z). He has been artistic director of jazz workshops in Singapore, Italy, and Korea, and is author of the acclaimed 6-volume book series on jazz rhythm (please see therhythmbooks.com).
Rory makes his Perth debut, performing original music with a group of Perth’s finest musicians, featuring drummer Ben Vanderwal.
