It was bound to happen. From their first collaboration in 2004, pianist Wolfert Brederode and drummer Joost Lijbaart revealed a rare musical chemistry – a dialogue so intuitive it feels like a new instrument is being created in real time. Their partnership, first captured on the audiobook Shadow Child, has since blossomed on stage and in the studio into one of Europe’s most captivating duos. 

Their secret lies in balance. Rather than percussion supporting piano, Lijbaart’s playing often shadows and complements Brederode’s lines, transforming the drums into an extension of the keyboard. The result is an impressionistic sound world where silence, restraint, and fragility carry as much weight as notes themselves. Brederode’s delicate touch – as if coaxing tone from fragile glass – meets Lijbaart’s mastery of subtle textures, creating music that shimmers on the edge of audibility. 

The duo’s performances are meditative journeys. Their compositions unfold with patient intensity, drawing listeners into landscapes of atmosphere, memory, and imagination. Tracks such as Traces and Empty Rooms evoke images of wandering through abandoned spaces, where only echoes and emotions remain.
