Nest Project Launch (Carlton/Scott/Barrett)
‘In this nest of found things’ (‘Nest’ for short) represents the coming together of three distinct, critically acclaimed voices in jazz and improvised music. Jessica Carlton (trumpet), Dom Barrett (guitar), and Holli Scott (voice) combine thoughtfully honed approaches to their instruments with strong compositional voices to create a sound that is ethereal, moving, and affecting. Each song rises and falls with a movement that reflects a shared love of live improvisation and interaction. With a long list of state, national and international awards and nominations between them, this new collaboration is bound to entrance and draw you in.
Nest recently performed Scott’s work in Sydney for the prestigious Freedman Jazz Fellowship Finals, and now rejoin in Perth to perform a curated selection of works by all three musicians as they officially launch their collaborative project into the world.
About the Members:
Holli Scott is an award winning vocalist and composer in Australian jazz/improvised music, lauded by ABC Jazz’s Monica Trapaga as ‘A true poet… deep, gutsy, human, and very vulnerable’. Her recent album ‘Weather and Weeds’ was released to critical acclaim, labeled “an immersive, deeply expressive work that lingers long after listening” by Dingo Jazz. Scott received the WAM Song of the Year award for jazz (2025), was a finalist in the prestigious Freedman Fellowship (2025) and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (2020), and has accumulated multiple award nominations over the years, including currently for ‘best jazz act’ in the 2025 WAM awards.
Jessica Carlton is a trumpet player and composer originally from Melbourne (Naarm) and currently based in Perth (Boorloo). She has been nominated for numerous awards including the Freedman Jazz Fellowship in 2021 and 2023; the Bell Award’s Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year in 2015; West Australian Music (WAM)’s ‘Best Brass/Woodwind/Strings Player’ in 2022, 2023 & 2025; WAM’s ‘Best Jazz Act’ in 2023 & 2025; and WAM Song of the Year 2025. Carlton’s latest release, ‘Ekphrasis’ (2024) is an album of compositions written as part of her post-graduate studies on musical ekphrasis (musical transformations of works of visual art and poetry).
Dom Barrett is a versatile guitarist, well versed in jazz/improvised music, as well as in the contemporary/rock scenes. He is known for his work with Orphans and UMBRA trio, and also has many WAM award nominations to his name. Dom’s style is inspired by that of Bill Frisell and Julian Lage, with a focus on texture, emotion and flexibility in his compositions and performance style.
