Australian Jazz Awards finalist (vocals) and multi award-winning music filmmaker Emma Franz finally returns to her hometown and The Ellington to deliver swinging standards, a touch of 40’s rhythm and blues, and songs of her travels.
Having already established herself on the Perth music scene, Emma headed for Melbourne at the ripe old age of 19 with brother Ben Franz (the Waifs, Tim Rogers), where she became a regular on Tonight Live with Steve Vizard and played regularly with such luminaries as Allan Browne, Mark Fitzgibbon, Doug DeVries, Sam Lemann, and the Moovin’ and Groovin’ Big Band. Once she was travelling the world with her singing, she felt inspired to make films that better reflected her experience of music and being a working artist. Her first music feature was the internationally lauded Intangible Asset Number 82, featuring Simon Barker, followed by a character portrait of guitarist and composer Bill Frisell.
Her Ellington gig represents a rare opportunity to catch her on a Perth stage. Featuring Ben Vanderwal on drums, Karl Florisson on bass, and Russell Holmes on piano.
