Australia’s only vibraphonist band leader and winner of an Australian Jazz Award and Churchill Fellowship, Garry Lee first heard Milt Jackson with the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1968. He was inspired to take up the vibraphone along with the guitar, his first instrument, leading bands in Sydney and then Perth.
Garry has shared the bandstand with Red Rodney [Charlie Parker Quintet], Dave Samuels [Spyro Gyra – Garry’s first vibraphone teacher} and many of Australia’s top jazz musicians – Don Burrows, Bernie McGann, Dale Barlow, Brian Brown, Bob Sedergreen, Bobby Gebert, Tony Gould – at performances in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth [as well as performing concerts in Singapore with bassist Victor Gaskin – Thelonious Monk Quartet, Cannonball Adderley Quintet, Ramsey Lewis Trio; Takashi Ohi Quartet in Japan].
Garry’s quintet has now been playing together for over three years and have reflected the repertoire and approach epitomized by Milt and the great Bobby Hutcherson who sadly passed away a decade ago last 15 August.
Joey DeFrancesco noted: “Bobby is the greatest player of all time…Milt Jackson was the guy, but Bobby took it to the next level. It’s like Milt was Charlie Parker and Bobby was John Coltrane.”
Garry’s quintet blends some of WA’s most experienced and gifted jazz musicians – Mike Collinson, Ookii Effendi – with two of the most outstanding emerging young musicians – Finn McKibbon, Callum Thomson.
