The 2025 Ellington Equity and Excellence Award winners Ella Sarson and Matilda Cronin present: ROOTS

With full artistic license over the project, this show will be an exciting showcase of Ella and Matilda’s musical growth so far. While their focus at WAAPA is on jazz, ROOTS combines elements of many musical influences that Ella and Matilda share across multiple genres. They will revisit material that inspired the early stages of their journeys alongside the sounds that are currently shaping their futures.

Ella is a flautist and second-year Bachelor of Music (Jazz) student at WAAPA. Her roots in flute are classical, but while completing her diploma of classical performance, she developed a passion for playing jazz that inspired her to take a new musical direction. Since then, she has explored the flute’s versatility by playing and performing a range of genres and styles of music. Alongside Matilda, she hopes to showcase the flute’s unique voice in jazz and its capabilities as a leading instrument.

Matilda is a jazz vocalist in her second year of the Bachelor of Music (Jazz) degree at WAAPA. She began her journey as a classical vocalist before discovering her love for jazz through the Gifted and Talented Music Program at Churchlands Senior High School. Since then, Matilda has collaborated with a range of ensembles and in June 2026, she will attend the Jazz Arts Collective Summer Program at Fordham University in New York. On her return, she looks forward to sharing her artistic growth alongside Ella at their award show.

The Ellington Jazz Club is proud to present the inaugural recipients of The Ellington Jazz Club Prizes for Excellence and Equity. The Ellington Jazz club is proud to support two annual prizes of $2000 each, awarded to exceptionally talented students, and students who may experience disadvantage achieving entry into WAAPA due to financial or social challenges. The Ellington have a particular interest in supporting talent development for women in the music industry, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students entering the music industry through WAAPA. The proceeds from this performance at The Ellington will support their musical career.
