Bass guitarist Christopher Hale has been called “one of the most unique and respected musicians in Australia” (Glam Adelaide), an “unconventional virtuoso of the bass guitar” (The Age), an “Australian jazz heavyweight and a brilliant, groundbreaking composer” (Rhythms Magazine). Growing up playing Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and flamenco music, Hale has forged a distinctly original approach to jazz that combines complex rhythmic mastery with elevating melodies and soaring emotion.
Hale and legendary Perth saxophonist Jamie Oehlers have collaborated for over a decade. Their recent album Ritual Diamonds, created with Korean master drummer Woo Minyoung, was hailed as “a milestone album for Australian jazz” (Australian Jazz Museum), and been presented at major festivals in Australia, Japan and Korea.
For this special Ellington performance, Hale and Oehlers perform music from Ritual Diamonds and brand-new works, joined by an all-star band of West coast masters:
Tom O’Halloran (piano)
Jeremy Thomson (guitar)
Ben Vanderwal (drums)
