Perth Women’s International Jazz Festival proudly presents a trumpet double header, pairing emerging talent Zoe Boyd with multi-award-winning Jessica Carlton across two featured sets.

Jessica Carlton is a trumpet player and composer originally from Melbourne (Naarm) and currently based in Perth (Boorloo). She holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from Monash Uni, a Master of Arts (Performing Arts) from WAAPA, and is currently undertaking a PhD at WAAPA. She has been nominated for numerous awards including the Music Trust’s Freedman Jazz Fellowship in 2021 and 2023; the Bell Award’s Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year in 2015; West Australian Music (WAM)’s ‘Best Brass/Woodwind/Strings Player’ in 2022, 2023 & 2025; WAM’s ‘Best Jazz Act’ in 2023 & 2025, and WAM Song of the Year 2025. Jessica was Composer in Residence for the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2023. She has led bands at the Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival, the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, the Perth International Jazz Festival, and the Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York (2023). She has recorded and released original compositions on Not Alone (2014) and Undeniable (a collaborative quartet album, 2022), For Olivia (2023), and her latest release Ekphrasis (2024). Jessica is interested in composing music in a project-based manner drawing on different inspirations such as art and literature, and social and political movements. As an autistic woman and mother, she is very passionate about advocating for diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion within the music industry and music education.

Zoe Boyd is a trumpet player based in Perth who has just completed her Bachelor Of Music  at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Since 2019, Zoe has been a member of WAYJO and also performs regularly with the Artemis Orchestra and Firebug Big Band. Throughout her time at WAAPA, she has had the opportunity to work with incredible guest artists including Melissa Aldana and Troy Roberts. She has also performed with The Embassy Big Band as well as the WA Jazz Project. Throughout her last year at WAAPA, she has been focusing writing original music and diving into the world of composition. Beyond performing, she is passionate about fostering diversity and creating a welcoming jazz community.
