Gianni Petta returns to the Ellington with his hard hitting quartet, featuring special guest drummer, Ben Shelley, home from the USA! Come see this band present brand new original compositions as well as reimagined classics from the Jazz Repertoire!
Gianni, is a woodwind performer, composer, & educator, currently studying his honours year at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, researching multi-instrumental practice methodologies. As a player, he is compelled by the playing of saxophonists such as Rich Perry, Joe Henderson and Tim Garland, whilst as a composer, he is fascinated by the works of writers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, Charles Mingus & Jim McNeely. Gianni recently spent a month in New York taking part in the Jazz Arts Collective’s Summer Jazz program, where he was lucky enough to study with legendary Baritone Saxophonist Gary Smulyan. He can be seen performing regularly around Perth with groups such as the Fire-Bug Band, The WAAPA Big Band, along with his duo, trio & quartets. He can also regularly be heard performing in musical theatre productions on a variety of woodwind instruments. Gianni aspires to write, perform and record music for large ensemble projects as well as for the more intimate setting of a chord-less quintet.
