Big band jazz has long been shaped by extraordinary women as composers, arrangers, instrumentalists and bandleaders – even when their contributions have not always received the recognition they deserve.
Women in Big Band celebrates the powerful legacy and ongoing influence of women in large-ensemble jazz. Featuring music by trailblazers such as Melba Liston, Mary Lou Williams and Toshiko Akiyoshi, alongside contemporary voices including Kristin Berardi, the program highlights the depth, innovation and enduring impact of women’s writing and artistry in big band music.
The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra is joined by special guest Sue Bluck, one of Australia’s most respected jazz pianists, vocalists, educators and bandleaders. Her involvement offers emerging musicians the opportunity to collaborate closely with a leading artist while bringing this vibrant repertoire to life on stage.
Bold, swinging and deeply expressive, Women in Big Band both honours a rich lineage and foregrounds the voices continuing to shape the future of large-ensemble jazz.
Prior to the performance, Sue Bluck will present a short artist talk upstairs from 5:10–5:30pm. Capacity is limited and entry is first in, first served.
