Doors 6pm
Show 7pm
William Chiew is a drummer from Perth with a love for old fashioned swing, evocative melodies and lyrical ballads. With a history of leading bands, including Rubaclava (which ranged from a 12-20 piece original jazz project) and Theme Town (a 6-piece ensemble blending movie themes with big band classics), The Will Chiew Quintet is a synthesis of these passion projects with the goal of bringing an authentic and uncompromising performance to the Ellington. The combo takes influence from the lyricism of Chet Baker, the pocket of Count Basie, and the dramaticism of great film scores to create an organic and honest take on the swing tradition. Armed with a setlist full of unexpected earworms, the band features an array of accomplished individuals who bring their own signature flair, including:
Lachlan Glover – an incredibly hard-working tenor saxophonist and trumpet player, a stalwart of the Perth scene already at the age of 25.
Josiah Padmanabham – an inventive and inspired piano player and composer, known for his integral part in Grievous Bodily Calm.
Aaron Deacon – a leading guitarist of the gypsy jazz scene, with a hard-swinging rhythmic feel and virtuosic soloing capabilities.
Tom Berkmann – a delightful new arrival to the Perth jazz scene from Germany, with an incredible ear for weaving melodic lines.
Each member will be featured throughout the night on a mix of hard-swinging standards, fresh originals and some hidden gems, rediscovered for this one-off show. This will be a passionate night of music straight from the heart!
