PERTH INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL AT THE ELLINGTON JAZZ CLUB
25TH OCTOBER – 2ND NOVEMBER
Banksia Trio is a cutting-edge jazz ensemble based in Tokyo, formed in 2017 by bassist Takashi Sugawa with pianist Masaki Hayashi and drummer Shun Ishiwaka. Known for their original compositions, the trio’s sound is shaped by each member’s writing, creating music that is both inventive and deeply collaborative. They have released three albums, shared the stage with renowned artists across Japan and abroad, and most recently performed alongside Gretchen Parlato in a double bill with her quartet in September 2024. Their latest album, MASKS (TSGW MUSIC, 2023), was celebrated with a live performance at Blue Note Tokyo. Named after the Australian Banksia plant, whose seeds are released only by fire, the trio draws inspiration from this cycle of renewal and transformation — a fitting metaphor for their ever-evolving sound.
