PIJF: Focus on Jazz Piano feat. Hanna Kim, Tristan Wills, Brodie Stewart & Russell Holmes

Friday 05 November 7.00pm

Focus on Jazz Piano at The Ellington will showcase Perth’s best jazz pianists as part of the Perth International Jazz Festival. Focus on Jazz Piano at The Ellington is dedicated to the memory of the late Graham Wood, founder of The Ellington and Perth International Jazz Festival.

Tonight’s show features Hanna Kim, Tristan Wills, Brodie Stewart, and Russell Holmes.

Hanna Kim is pianist from South Korea. She started learning piano at the young age of 6 and since then it has played a major role in her life. Due to her interest in music, she enrolled in Seoul Art College to study a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Piano Performance, which she graduated from in 2009. Since her graduation, she had been a regular participant in music performances around Korea until the year 2014, which is when she decided to move to Perth. Since her arrival in Perth, she has not shown any signs of slowing down and she has performed in a number of jazz gigs and festivals. In this performance, Hanna hopes the audience will be able to experience a beautiful and warm performance integrating jazz and crossover, with varied musical elements weaved within to represent her diverse cultural background.

Tristan Wills is a pianist based in Perth who currently performs, composes and teaches. Tristan is involved in several creative ensembles such as the Ryan Daunt Trio, Ardent, the Tristan Wills Quintet, Trio and Tristans original singer songwriter music. Tristan has recorded 3 albums this year. One for Ryan Daunt and 2 under his own name. His first album is called ‘The Genesis Project.’ The compositions of this album endeavour to explore the biblical story of Genesis through instrumental jazz. This will be released late this year. The second is comprised of original contemporary, singer songwriter music which will be released early next year. Tristan also performed and recorded for Ryan Daunts most recent album ‘Essence’. This has been released and will be performed at this years jazz festival. You can see Tristan perform both jazz and contemporary music regularly at multiple venues in Perth, including the Ellington Jazz Club and the Duke of George.

Brodie Stewart is an award-winning jazz pianist, keyboardist, composer, musical director, and audio engineer based in Perth, Western Australia. Brodie is at the forefront of the jazz and contemporary music scenes, where his forward-thinking musicianship has resulted in him being in high demand by national and international artists. Brodie has recently completed a national tour with Australian 90s pop sensation Human Nature, and has performed with Melonie Daniels (Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson), Claudio, Troy Roberts, Vince Jones, Normie Rowe, Perth Symphony Orchestra, and Dr. Jonathon Welch to name a few. A recipient of the “Channel 7 Award for Jazz” and a graduate with First Class Honours in Jazz Performance of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Brodie now lectures at WAAPA in the Contemporary Music course. Brodie has been performing with his trio since 2014. With an upcoming album in the pipeline, Brodie’s strong compositional signature draws from a kaleidoscope of influences, ranging from modern jazz and classical, through to R&B, folk and pop. His music has seen performances throughout Australia, America, and Europe.
