MI7 feat. Libby Hammer
Friday 09 July 7.00pm
MI7 is an exciting ensemble whose performances pay tribute to two of the most influential musicians in jazz history – Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk. Mingus was a powerhouse of technical control and invention, and his volatile personality and opinions shaped jazz trends from the 1950s through to the 1970s, especially in the arena of collective improvisation. Monk’s unique and unorthodox improvisational style featured angular, dissonant changes, and many of his compositions are now essentials in the standard jazz repertoire.
MI7 has been performing on and off for almost 22 years in Perth, and is a stellar lineup of WA’s most accomplished musicians: leader and bassist Murray Wilkins, Austin Salisbury on piano, saxophonists Roger Garrood and Steve Searle, Jeremy Greig on trombone, Ricki Malet on trumpet and Daniel Susnjar on drums. Joining MI7 tonight will be vocalist Libby Hammer, who for a few years now has been contributing vocals and even some of her own lyrics to repertoire that is traditionally instrumental. Come and check out this powerful and passionate lineup performing the music of two of the most iconoclastic individuals in the pantheon of jazz greats – Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
