Ben Stacy - WAAPA Jazz Graduation Recital

Wednesday 17 November 6.00pm

Ben Stacy is a Perth-based drummer who is currently completing his study of jazz performance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He plays in the free-jazz/noise trio ‘orphans’, as well as the minimalist avant-garde jazz quartet ‘Ghost Gum Reverb’, and is a former member of the experimental post-metal group, ‘Tangled Thoughts of Leaving’.

Inspired by modern drummers like as Chris Corsano and Frank Rosaly, Ben has been engaged in a solo drumming practice for a number of years, incorporating extended instrumental techniques and the augmentation of acoustic drum set through the use of contact microphones and guitar effects pedals. Since resuming his studies in 2018, he has also begun to compose music for small groups, taking inspiration from free-jazz innovators like Paul Motian and Ornette Coleman.

For his graduation recital performance, Ben will bring all of these elements together to present a set of music which explores the spaces between post-bop, free-jazz and experimental/noise music, and features his own compositions as well as the music of Ornette Coleman, Paul Motian, Charles Mingus, Frank Rosaly and Finnish jazz group, Ilmiliekki Quartet.
