Victoria Newton and Paul Booth
Friday, 29th October @8:00 PM

Award-winning UK saxophonist, Paul Booth and local jazz chanteuse, Victoria Newton collaborate their musical talents and love of Brazilian jazz, in a rare performance at the Ellington. Paul and Victoria worked together many times in the UK as part of original Brazilian band, Oxalà, which Paul composed most of the music for. Tonight they will be performing songs from the Oxalà era as well as originals composed especially for this gig.
Victoria Newton relocated to Perth in 2008 after many years in the UK, where she was recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic jazz vocalists on the scene. In recent times she performed at the famous Ronnie Scott’s in London, Alexis in Kuala Lumpur, for their International Jazz Series, and a dream gig performing Brazilian songs cruising up the Amazon! She has appeared at many festivals and venues throughout the UK and Europe including Queille in France, The Ingolstadt Jazz Festival in Germany, The Oxford Literary Festival, Marlborough and Swanage Jazz Festivals in the UK, Pizza Express, the 606 Club and The Jazz Café in London where she supported Terence Blanchard and performed with Ronny Jordan.
Victoria also experienced international success during the mid 1990s with UK dance/pop group Strike and their hit ‘U Sure Do’. This led to her appearing on MTV and the BBC’s Top of the Pops, touring throughout the world and recording the critically acclaimed album ‘I Saw the Future’. She also released her first jazz album ‘The Song is You’ in 2004 which received great response from the press and regular air play in the UK.
Having released three solo albums to date, Paul Booth has firmly established himself as an in demand solo artist, as well as a 'first call' sideman for many big names in both jazz and popular music worlds.
In his early years, whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music, he won many awards including the prestigious Clifford Brown/Stan Getz fellowship held in Miami, "The Best Modern Jazz Player" category in the televised "Young Jazz Player of the Year" competition and many more.
His ability to blend into any musical surrounding coupled with his talents as a multi-instrumentalist has seen him work with a variety of well-known artists. Paul is currently in the Steve Winwood band, can be seen touring with Basia, the BBC Big Band, Michael Janisch Quintet and has performed worldwide with the likes of Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Riverdance, Ingrid Jensen, Matt Bianco, Eddie Henderson, Alex Wilson, Roberto Pla, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Snowboy, Ray Gelato, Jane Monheit etc.
Paul is in the middle of recording a new trio album featuring three sets of trios, one already recorded in New York with drummer Clarence Penn and bass player Matt Brewer. The album will be released in March 2011 and trio dates are now being booked.

On the following drop down menu choose either table or bar. Table is seated, bar is standing. On busy nights small parties (1-3 people) share at the table. We have a range of tables that seat between 2-6 people.
You need to book one ticket per person, not the number of tables, so change the box which defaults to “1” to the number of people you are paying for. We will organise the tables according the number of people you book for.
If you have a group coming together but paying separately, nominate a group leader, and in the “comments” section of the online booking form, as the leader books, he/she tells us how many places to save, then the others paying independently put, for example, “Jane’s table” in the comments section of the online order form. This way we can be sure to seat your party all together. If you are coming singly or as a group and want to join another group, also tell us in the “comments” section.
