Juliana Areias – The bossa nova baby
Wednesday, 7th September @8:00 PM

Bossa Nova is more alive then ever through the voice of Brazilian singer Juliana Areias, who returns to The Ellington Jazz Club. Juliana brings with her the magic subtleties, stories and the evolution of the bossa rhythm that has inspired people to sway gently for over 50 years.

Known as The Bossa Nova Baby – a nickname given by Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro (author of Bossa Nova’s history book Chega de Saudade) – Juliana’s love for this seductive music evolved into a desire to become a professional singer after meeting and learning directly from some of its creators.

The concert will embrace timeless bossa classics – such as; The Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado, One note samba, Mas que nada,  No more blues ( Chega de Saudade), Waters of March ( Aguas de Marco)  – that were introduced to the Western English Speaking world by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao & Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra -  as well as breathtaking new songs and fresh arrangements with its resonance reflecting upon Diana Krall,  Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Raphael Rabello, Cazuza, Marisa Montes and other more recent jazz & contemporary music icons.

On board with Juliana Areias on this sensuous musical journey, is a stellar line up of musicians: Glenn Rogers-guitar, Tal Cohen-piano, Paul Millard – sax/flute, Pete Jeavons-bass, Michael Boase-drums and the multi talented Brazilian, Marcio Mendes-percussion/backing vocals. To make this an even more sensational night, Juliana is honoured to announce the presence of two of Australia’s finest jazz vocalists, as her very special guests: James Flynn and  Victoria Newton

Juliana Areias' career includes a performance at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival. Her authentic Brazilian voice, sense of groove, engaging charisma and a very personal and passionate stage presence are trademarks of her work.

“Bossa Nova is my essence as a person, my original impulse as a singer and my life-soul-heart’s pulse”
