The Glyn McDonald Group
Thursday, 12th August @11:30 PM

Tonights Ellington performance launches the new Glyn MacDonald Group. Tonight will also be a recording by ABC Radio’s Jazz Track.
The musicians have collectively performed all over the world including Vancouver, Rome, Japan and Australia.
The group welcomes new member bassist Nick Abbey and Saxophonist Matthew Styles. Nick has been performing with some of the greatest international and Australian jazz musicians in his short career and brings a real love for the groups approach and music as well as a prodigious technique and musicianship. Matthew Styles is a Doctor of music, has performed all over the world in jazz and classical ensembles. He is a Yamaha endorsed artist and a Churchill Fellow. Matthew is also a fulltime lecturer at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Matthew is a definite master of the saxophone and you will not want to miss his interpretations of the group’s music.
The group consisting of Nick Abbey (bass), Michael Perkins (drums) and Glyn MacDonald (piano) and Matthew Styles (Saxophones) draws influence from diverse ends of the musical spectrum. From classical through to Latin, and coupled with a knack for infectious toe-tappin’ swing, their collective works rest comfortably on a bed of groove-oriented originality.
"Glyn serves it up. He isn’t into just playing chords and devices but rather describing things with music, describing specific feelings or abstract concepts. He has a vision and his music will take you there if you allow it."
Barney Mcall New York pianist, Blue Note recording Artist, pianist for Gary Bartz
"An impressive young pianist who explores the musical possibilities with an enquiring mind and virtuosic skill. Watch this space...! "
Helen Matthews Jazz Program Producer, Perth International Arts Festival
"MacDonald plays with style and restraint. The three men bounce ideas off each other with practised ease. MacDonald also impresses as a composer. His melodies refuse to follow predictable routes, and his harmonies twist away from sugariness."
Peter J Casey Canberra Times (Jazz Reviewer)
"An appealing piano voice and a promising approach. Keep making the good music"
Tord Gustavson ECM recording artist
“Bound by the clutches of beauty, these original pieces demand an inviting as opposed to confronting improvisational approach. Rhythm plays a major role…MacDonald employs a soft elegant touch. [The] feeling of intense spontaneity comes in the tracks recorded live in Perth”
Peter Wockner ABC Limelight Magazine
