Shella featuring Shelly Addison

Shella (Shelly Addison Band) 
 
Performing jazz based repertoire in local venues, singing contemporary gospel music in church and writing her own original material from a young age, vocalist/composer/lyricist Shelly Addison found her voice in the spaces between soul, jazz and hip hop music.
 
Shelly’s love of music has taken her across the world and back on numerous occasions: In the U.S. she pursued research in both jazz and hip hop music, in Cuba she reflected on power and pluralism in Cuban rhythm, learning congas/clave and dancing with Cuban hip hop/reggae and salsa artists. Later Shelly was based in Canada and, travelling frequently to the US, was able to immerse herself in North American communities of soul, hip hop and jazz. Finally she returned to Australia to study jazz at WAAPA.
 
These communities of experience are represented in Shelly’s current compositions for Caracola. A combination of original nu jazz material and interpretations of jazz/neo soul repertoire, Caracola’s music is situated in the pluralistic place where appreciation of the old meets the possibilities of the new.
 
Caracola hosts some of Australia’s finest musicians and emerging musical innovators: Celebrated jazz guitarist and fusion expert Simon Jeans and renowned Australian drummer Ben Falle, are joined at the Ellington by the virtuosic sounds of multi award winner Dane Alderson on bass and the lush keys of composer/arranger/pianist Johannes Luebbers.
