Wyvern Big Band is celebrating its 21st Birthday!
Initially formed in 1996 as an instrumental alumni band for former students of Wesley College, WBB has since become more community-focused and now has a couple of vocalists, adding another dimension to its repertoire.
Former students of Wesley who have performed with WBB or been Musical Directors over the past 21 years include Ben Phillips, Tom Coveney, Tom Greble, Brian Mann, Mat Jodrell, Jeremy Trezona, Alex and Sam Bradbury, and James van de Ven.
Others who started out with WBB and have since moved on to bigger and better things include the likes of Adrian Hicks and Paul Schneider, and earlier on Drew Goddard and former Wesley student Jon Stockman of “Karnivool” fame who met at Wyvern Big Band rehearsals in 2000.
WBB has performed off-campus at venues as diverse as the Golden Ballroom at the Sheraton Perth Hotel and Joe’s Fish Shack in Fremantle.
In more recent years, WBB has performed mainly on-campus at Wesley College for Jazz Nights and even Christmas Carols (accompanying the Wesley/Penrhos Choir).
Our current Musical Director is Jonathan Maltman who succeeded Gemma Farrell in 2014, immediately after leaving Wesley to commence his Bachelor of Music (Composition and Music Technology) at WAAPA.
This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of Wesley’s Expanded Music programme, and somewhat amazingly, two of the initial cohort of seven in 1967 include two of the founding (and still current) members of WBB – Harry Moody and Nev. Bird.
