The Zagoria Quartet - Sounds of Southern Africa and beyond
Thursday 29 August 7.00pm
The Zagoria Quartet explore the sounds of Southern Africa, Southern Spain and the Middle East, blurring the boundaries of jazz, folk, blues and traditional music. Ilan Zagoria developed his driving and intricate Southern African guitar style growing up in Zimbabwe. In Australia since 1988, Ilan has supported artists such as Blur, Zap Mama, Yothu Yindi, Natasha Atlas and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. In Perth, Ilan has played and recorded with West Australian award-winning world music groups such as Sundiata Marimba Band, African Music Congress and Shangara Jive. He established his own group in 2014 to create highly rhythmic and diverse world-jazz incorporating guitar, mbira (Zimbabwean thumb piano), saxophone, bass, and drumkit.
The Quartet play traditional Zimbabwean mbira music juxtaposed with urban South African grooves alongside contemporary arrangements of Middle Eastern folk tunes. The guitar and saxophone led tunes feature jazz influenced improvisations and are underpinned by funky basslines together with Southern African and Middle Eastern drumming styles.
The Zagoria Quartet are:
Ilan Zagoria on nylon and steel string guitars, Zimbabwean mbira (thumb piano) and vocals
Mark Cain on saxophones and whistles
Wayan Dana on electric bass
Cain Munns on drumkit
