The New Standard Band - Rock meets Jazz

Wednesday 21 June 7.00pm

Want to hear hits from pop icons such as Bjork, Peter Gabriel, The Beatles, Portishead, even The Carpenters as jazz? This band (with 2 vocalists) applies the jazz filter and spits them out the other side as exciting and intoxicating sonorous alternate realities.

Jazz musicians have long been masters of taking popular music and twisting it on its head: the swing and beboppers took Broadway show tunes and turned them into classics. It’s now fairly common to hear rock tunes amongst the mix in a modern jazz show too. Herbie Hancock’s landmark album The New Standard (1995) propelled into jazz consciousness again the idea of borrowing popular tunes for a jazz rendition. That’s what this show is about, too.

Come and see some new cats use an experimental license on some classics of our time, featuring:

Nicole Murua – vocals and loops

Laura Igglesden – vocals

Tom O’Halloran – piano

Tom Salleo – trombone

Phil Lochner – guitar

Wayan Biliondana – electric and acoustic bass

Quinn Wells – drums
