The Music of Michel Legrand presented by ‘LiveLighter Bonjour Perth Festival’

Wednesday 04 October 7.00pm

Michel Legrand is a three times Academy Award-winning French composer, conductor and pianist who composed over 200 film and television scores as well as recorded over a hundred albums of jazz, popular and classical music. Legrand collaborated with legendary Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Stephane Grappelli, Phil Woods, Ray Charles, Claude Nougaro, Perry Como, Neil Diamond, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Jessye Norman, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Bassey, Nana Mouskouri etc.

His celebrated scores for the films of French New Wave director Jacques Demy, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), earned Legrand his first Academy Award nominations. For The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and its title song, “The Windmills of Your Mind”, Legrand won his first Oscar.

A number of his songs, including “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?”, “Watch What Happens”, “The Summer Knows”, and “You Must Believe in Spring”, have become jazz standards covered frequently by other artists.

French-Australian vocalist Geraldine Rey, joined by pianist Thierryno Gangou (from world jazz outfit ‘457’’), bass player Joe Southwell, drummer Vince Pavitt, saxophonist Jeremy Trezona and guest vocalist Quentin Thony will pay tribute to one of the most prolific and inspiring composer of our times.
