The Master & The Apprentice: Simon Styles, Roger Garood & The Mike Nelson Trio
Wednesday 12 May 7.00pm
Featuring the Master – Roger Garood, his saxophone Apprentice – Simon Styles, and the Mike Nelson Trio.
Roger Garood has been the sax jazz master in Perth for 6 decades and Simon was one of the thousands of students he taught. For the first time in 40 years, Roger and Simon front their own quintet playing tunes Roger introduced to Simon in the early 80s – standards, Parker, Canonball, Horace Silver and more .
THE MASTER (Roger) – Originally from the UK, Roger was already a world class jazz player by the time he reached our shores. He has played every type of music possible on sax from quartets to jazz to theatre shows to orchestral work, lead alto in big bands like Will Upson and club and house backing bands. As a very accomplished doubler Roger also did regular session work, jingles, TV performances and played on numerous albums on saxes (sop, alto, tenor) flute (and alto flute) and clarinet too. Roger has taught beginners to advanced students and of course lectured in jazz saxophone at WAAPA for many years and is a WAYJO Hall of Famer. One of his private jazz students along the way was Simon Styles.
THE APPRENTICE (Simon) – From Perth and classically trained, Roger was recommended to Simon as The Saxman in Perth to learn from. His lessons were always hands on playing, muso chat, mouthpieces and the usual nerdy sax talk! But mostly backing tracks, playing and trading solos. After months of this Roger’s advice was simple – “You need to find a band and play. You will learn very quickly what works and what doesn’t”. The apprentice entered his first top 40 band and Roger’s words rang true. Simon worked with cover bands, the original WAYJO and then the orchestra, then in theatre shows, as a section player in Will Upson under Roger and then eventually represented Australia in Mike Nelson’s Four on the Floor jazz quartet at Jazz Yatra in India.
This is the FIRST TIME the Master and his Apprentice have come together in their own quintet after a nearly 40 year association. With the backing of the incredible Mike Nelson Trio, Roger has asked Simon to review material from those early lessons that included Parker, Cannonball, Horace Silver and others for the night. No doubt the Master will still have a few tricks up his sleeve for the night.
