The BlackTop Playlist: Kendrick Lamar & Anderson .Paak

Saturday 23 June 10.30pm

BlackTop are back to share their playlist, this time exploring the music of the incredible artistic forces of Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak.

Referred to as a “master of storytelling”, Kendrick Lamar has solidified his position as one of the greatest rappers of this generation. Accolades he has received over the course of his career include twelve Grammy Awards, and he is the only non-classical and non-jazz artist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time, Lamar’s music is always ahead of the game, providing insight and commentary on relevant contemporary issues, whilst remaining on high rotation on the charts and in clubs.

Anderson .Paak’s unique sound invites audiences into his personal stories of love, struggle, and success through a blend of hip-hop, R&B, rock, funk and soul. The flexibility in his style has made him highly desirable to celebrated producers, including Dr. Dre, who featured.Paak prominently on Compton, where he shined onto everybody’s radar. .Paak’s uncompromising dedication to his sound has resulted in a genre-expanding library of music, with Malibu landing at number 9 on Rolling Stone’s top 20 albums of 2016.

With both artists featuring on Dr Dre’s Compton, and also working closely together on The Black Panther Soundtrack, the thought of an exciting collaboration between these two Californian icons doesn’t seem too far fetched!! While we eagerly wait (hope) for this to happen, BlackTop will bridge the gap and bring both of these artists’ best songs to date, to the Ellington stage with a slammin 6 piece band.
