Formed in mid 2015, Sassafras has now established a reputation as one of Perth’s premier gypsy jazz groups. Perhaps best known for their work with the quintet version of the band (“Sassafras” – featuring vocalist Jessie Gordon), the four instrumentalists have also been steadily developing their sound as a tight-knit and energetic instrumental group: Sassafras Quartet.
The quartet repertoire features gypsy jazz classics from Django Reinhardt alongside music from modern masters such as Biréli Lagrène, Gonzalo Bergara, Les Doigts De L’Homme and others. The band also has varied selection of original arrangements of classic and lesser-known jazz standards, as well as some original works – all with a progressive leaning.
Sassafras has sold out numerous gigs at venues such as the Ellington Jazz Club, The Duke of George, Jazz Fremantle, Kidogo Arthouse, The Paddlesteamer Decoy, Juniper Studio and Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den. For four years in a row, the band has presented a season of shows as part of the Perth Fringeworld Festival (“An Evening in Paris” from 2016-18, and “Under Paris Skies” in 2019) – all to sell out crowds and rave reviews. The band has also featured at a number of other festivals including: The Jazz By The Bay Festival (2017), Perth International Jazz Festival (2017), King Street Corner Pocket Festival (2018), and the Oz Manouche Festival (Brisbane, 2018).
Sassafras Quartet combines toe-tapping swing, breakneck gypsy jazz and re-worked jazz standards in a vibrant and engaging mix of acoustic music, all performed with the dazzling virtuosity and passion that is intrinsic to the gypsy jazz tradition.

Ron Banks, The West Australian Newspaper, June 2017
” Sassafras is undoubtedly a smooth, well-rehearsed and tightly run ship…”
Mariyon Slany, Artshub, Feb 1st 2016
” The Sassafras instrumentalists excelled throughout the evening, with virtuosic solos and seamless transitions. The acoustic guitar playing from Lachlan Gear and Aaron Deacon was perfect and lovely. Adrian Galante on clarinet (played) some swinging rhythms taking us back to the 1930’s Paris and Pete Jeavons reliable double bass playing shows his great experience.”
Mariyon Slany, Artshub, Feb 1st 2016
” Lead soloist Galante is routinely given a run for his money by Jeavons’s bass solos, Deacon’s strumming and Gear’s fantastically fast and accurate picking. Altogether, it makes for a first-rate performance.”
Brandon Taylor, The Australia Times, Jan 31st 2016
