PIJF: Chris McNulty

Sunday 08 November 3.00pm

Internationally acclaimed vocalist-composer, Chris McNulty has been captivating audiences world wide for decades with her powerful performances. McNulty also belongs to a generation of highly inventive jazz vocalists who’ve managed to successfully transverse paths into composing and arranging.  Jazz Times critic, Harvey Siders wrote “If McNulty’s vocalizing is fearless, then her writing is peerless….her explorations seem to transcend to a free zone between jazz and modern symphonic”.

As a vocalist her warm, soulful sound and liquid phrasing melds seamlessly across a wide range of styles and idioms. Whether immersed in swing, blues, bossa or ballad the singer’s story-telling gift has you hanging on every phrase.  McNulty’s uncanny ability in creating an effortless synergy with her musicians is a hallmark of any performance. Based in NYC for 28 years Chris returned several times to perform at PIJF. She’s recently made Perth her forever home and is proud to now be called a local PIJF performer.
For this year’s PIJF 2020 at The Ellington, McNulty will be joined by the powerhouse ensemble of Ben Vanderwal, Chris Foster and Nick Abbey. Together they’ll be presenting music from the Great American Song Book interspersed with several of Chris’ original compositions.

A singer of great subtlety and exceptional sensitivity.  Eloquent, expressive and extremely exciting. The subtle variations she applies to each song aptly illustrate her unflinching commitment to jazz. A consummate artist, her unsentimental approach suggests a certain vulnerability and emphasizes an intimacy few singers can match.”
— Mike Pinfold, journalist, writer – UK, Howden Jazz Society, Wakefield Jazz Society, UK – January 2005

“God, I got a hot flash after I heard this lady sing…she whispers dynamically….McNulty possesses great taste, she’s got it all…control, vocalese, vibrato, et al….nothing routine & unimaginative here…rather sexy, definitive, and alive! McNulty is…capable of injecting emotion, pathos, irony & meaning into her work ….a gift that few singers can lay claim to.”
— George W. Carroll/The Musician’s Ombudsman, August 2006

“McNulty has put all she has learned over half a lifetime of jazz singing and songwriting into this exquisite chamber jazz CD. The Australian born, New York City-based singer and a veteran performer on the international jazz scene, has many gifts as a performer and a direct channel to the emotional core of a lyric. On this CD, McNulty bares her soul, and one doesn’t dare look away.”
— 4 1/2 stars, Allen Morrison, Downbeat, June 2015

“….She prefers to linger over tunes, exploring and elongating them, reinterpreting, and transfusing well-worn melodies with perfectly creative timing and phrasing. An absolute showstopper was the Burt Bacharach composition “Make It Easy on Yourself” where McNulty wove a soulful descant with a quiet poignant delicacy. It was a showcase of world-class talent and professionalism.”
–– John McBeath, The Australian, September 6th, 2008

“… Jazz Export brings it all home…McNulty is a superb jazz vocalist with a highly professional delivery that comes from performing consistently with the world’s best jazz musicians in the most demanding jazz environment” –– Gary Lee, The West Australian, May 4, 2005
