Penny King Quartet: Looking Back, Moving Forward
Saturday 18 June 7.00pm
Having just celebrated a *big birthday, Penny is reflecting on being a part of the thriving jazz community here in Perth for over 25 years!
This show will revisit some of Penny’s favourite musical memories from over the years, as well as sharing some more recent compositions and arrangements.
Featuring Penny on vocals and her regular line up of supremely talented musicians:
Tom O’Halloran – Piano
Pete Jeavons – Bass
Michael Perkins – Drums
‘King is simply an excellent tradition-rooted jazz singer, whose phrasing and scat are jazz elements delivered with rich, pitch-perfect, humanly nuanced ease.’
- Katie Bull, The New York City Jazz Record
‘Penny King is a fine musician. Her pitch is excellent, accompanied by a crystal clear and authentic tone. Her soloing is always inventive and she nails the shifts in dynamic intensity in all the right places.’
– Chris McNulty, Australianjazz.net
‘Opening the proceedings with the beautiful “My Old Man”, King’s lilting tones roamed and soared to achieve the technically difficult Mitchell song style. To begin with she was only accompanied by the marvellous Tom O’ Halloran. What a virtuoso keyboard artist. His work is thrilling.’
– Claire Condry, Australian Stage (The Music of Joni Mitchell Performance)
