Penny King Quartet

Friday 11 October 7.00pm

Join Perth Jazz scene mainstays vocalist Penny King, along with Tom O’Halloran, Pete Jeavons and Michael Perkins, as they present an evening of fine music, including takes on the great jazz standards and beyond.  The group will be exploring an eclectic range of music, bringing grace, refinement and signature sounds developed through years of making music together.

This evenings performance will explore the far reaches of the jazz genre, along with a nod to the great American songbooks, and some of Penny’s more recent compositions.  Moving effortlessly between jazz and contemporary repertoire, expect the unexpected; with previous performances including Radiohead followed by Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins next to Joni Mitchell, and contemporary Australian classics next to original compositions, there is something for every music lover.

More about Penny King:

Penny King is a seasoned and deeply respected jazz vocalist from Perth, Western Australia. A firm favourite of Perth jazz audiences for over twenty years, Penny King has remained highly in-demand at Perth’s best live music venues and festivals throughout her career. Her style defies musical classification, moving effortlessly between jazz and contemporary repertoire whilst adding her own touch to much-loved standards and modern hits. Working exclusively with Perth’s leading jazz musicians, Penny performs with grace, refinement and an unmistakeable signature sound that has been carefully honed over many years of performance and recording.

Known for her engaging stage presence and a sound ranging from rich swinging tones through to haunting and fragile melodies, Penny King commands an audience’s attention with aplomb.

Penny received national and international recognition in 2013 with her album Journey, recorded with her quintet comprised of some of the leading lights in Australian jazz today: Tom O’Halloran, Pete Jeavons, Michael Perkins and Carl Mackey. The album was subsequently shortlisted for Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album at the 2014 Australian Jazz ‘Bell’ Awards. The album features both original compositions and original arrangements of jazz and contemporary standards, and was met with widespread critical acclaim.

A regular at The Ellington Jazz Club, Penny has also appeared at numerous festivals, including the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival, Rottnest’s ‘Jazz on the Rock Festival’, the York Jazz Festival, the Beaufort St. Festival, Fremantle International Jazz Festival and the Jazz By The Bay Festival, Dunsborough. In 2016, Penny travelled to Melbourne to perform original music and arrangements at the Paris Cat Jazz Club.

She has been a featured vocalist with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, through which she has had opportunities to sing alongside jazz luminaries such as James Morrison and Dale Barlow. Penny has made numerous appearances at the Perth Jazz Society and has also appeared regularly at Jazz Fremantle, as well as countless other venues around Western Australia. She has previously had an original track featured on the Jazzaziz II CD, released in 2005 by JazzWA, and was featured on the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 1996 CD release ‘Night and Day’.

Penny is also a sought-after vocal tutor, teaching in both the Jazz Department at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and privately.

King is simply an excellent tradition-rooted jazz singer, whose phrasing and scat are jazz elements delivered with rich, pitch-perfect, humanly nuanced ease’ Katie Bull, The New York City Jazz Record

Penny King is a fine musician…. Her pitch is excellent, accompanied by a chrystal clear and authentic tone. Her soloing is always inventive and she nails the shifts in dynamic intensity in all the right places’. Chris McNulty, Australianjazz.net
