Paal Nilssen-Love & Sten Sandell (Norway/Sweden) / Mette Rasmussen & Sofia Jernberg (Sweden/Ethiopia): Audible Edge Festival Launch 2018

Monday 29 January 8.00pm

Tone List and Tura New Music are proud to present four premier artists from the Scandinavian avant-garde jazz scene in two duos, as the official launch of the 2nd annual Audible Edge festival. These two duos will present entirely improvised performances, drawing from highly distinct and developed languages.

Paal Nilssen-Love & Sten Sandell’s shared biographies include collaborations with some of the leading voices in experimental spaces, inclusive of James “Blood” Ulmer, Joe McPhee, John Butcher, Mats Gustafsson, Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker, Sven-Åke Johansson and more. There’ll be a huge amount of energy in this performance, as the duo drift between extraordinary heights of intensity and utmost intimacy across drum kit & piano.

Sofia Jernberg & Mette Rasmussen might be best known for their work with Fire! Orchestra and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and as a touring support act for seminal post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This voice and saxophone duo push the physical limits of what body and instrument are capable of, creating a highly singular sound world unique to the new kind of virtuosity they have developed. Their sculpting and articulation of highly detailed sounds is of the highest calibre – to hear a duo like this in Western Australia is a rare privilege.
