Mia Matthiessen - WAAPA Contemporary Recital
Monday 02 October 8.00pm
With her 5 years of intensive study at WAAPA coming to an end, Mia invites you to join her as she showcases what she’s learnt and how far she’s grown as a vocalist.
Mia’s musical journey has been quite an interesting one. Developing a passion for music theatre at a young age, she performed in many a musical up until her late teens. It wasn’t until she graduated high school that she developed a love for Contemporary Music. Discovering artists like Kimbra, Jill Scott and Sara Bareilles, whose music quickly inspired her, caused Mia to deviate from what she’d always thought she’d be as a performer.
Since then Mia has performed extensively throughout Perth. Her versatility as a vocalist and performer has seen her receive countless opportunities over the years. This included a yearlong stint with Perth’s renowned Rock cover band, Slim Jim & The Phatts. Leaving the band to pursue her vocal goals, Mia now aspires to write and release her original music – some of which you will hear on the night.
At this recital you can expect to hear a plethora of different styles from multi-dimensional neo-soul, to pop ballads, and all things in between. Mia is a soulful, captivating performer. She will draw you in with her organic stage presence, uncensored banter and raw vocals. It is with great anticipation that Mia presents this recital and hopes you will join her as she bids farewell to the institution that has enabled her to become the singer she is today.
