Late-night jazz sessions: THE FIX (ft. Daniel Susnjar)
Friday 29 July 10.30pm
Ricki Malet: trumpet
Chris Foster: piano
Nick Abbey: bass
Daniel Susnjar: drums (special guest!)
From 2004 until the onset of the pandemic, THE FIX ran a legendary late-night jazz session on Thursdays at The Moon Café. If you’ve ever been out in Northbridge, chances are you’ve stumbled upon this excellent, tight-knit, and spontaneous group doing their thing!
THE FIX presents impromptu jazz at its finest: a great way to see off the work week or to wind down post-gig. Tonight’s edition will be especially fiery, featuring powerhouse drummer DANIEL SUSNJAR as a special guest behind the kit. Expect this quartet to bring their high-energy, trademark take on hard bop, featuring tunes made popular by classic groups like Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Lee Morgan, as well as a few original compositions.
Their long-running residency frequently featured drop-ins by national and international jazz luminaries (such as Aaron Choulai, Alex Norris, Troy Roberts, Linda May Han Oh, Sam Anning, Emiliano Sampaio, Carl Mackey, Brandon Allen, Mat Jodrell, and Mariel Bildsten, to name a few!), so don’t be surprised if you catch them collaborating on-the-fly with a heavy-hitting special guest or two, especially in the second set!
A note for patrons:
Table seats are available for late-night jazz! They’re unallocated, though, so be there early if you’re keen on securing one.
A note for musicians:
Impromptu sit-ins are a much-loved feature of THE FIX, and we are excited to be bringing them back this month! With the heightened performance focus of The Ellington, we can’t make it exactly the same ‘open jam’ format as it was back at The Moon – instead, the band will generally play the first set, then we will come and scope people out in the break and put together some lineups and tunes for the 2nd set.
Don’t be shy in coming to chat with us! There won’t be an opportunity for everyone to play every time, but we will work to make it a welcoming vibe and share the love around
