Land Speed Record: Mace Francis Nonet
Thursday 12 March 7.00pm
This 9-piece ensemble, led by composer-arranger Mace Francis, is influenced by modern jazz composers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely, Alan Ferber, Darcy James Argue and John Hollenbeck. In 2012 Mace recorded and release Land Speed Record, with a New York ensemble. In 2013 a Perth version of this band performed at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz. It has been a long time between drinks with this nonet, but tonight Mace will present a new line up to bring this old and brand new music to life.
Each composition is a musical landscape to feature a soloist in the band. The music is built on melodic, harmonic or rhythmic thematic material with a focus on texture and groove. The nonet allows a lightness and focus on the individual musicians personality which is different from a big band sound, however the power and texture of a larger ensemble can be achieved if necessary.
“The writing here is exemplarity, both in terms of the themes written, and the use of the instrumentation (alto, tenor, trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet, guitar and rhythm section) to suggest a much larger ensemble, one with a rich and varied harmonic and textural palette.” Adrian Jackson, Rhythm Magazine
“His compositions were interesting and intelligent with something to say, while the voicings, using tenor and alto sax, bass clarinet with trombone and trumpet, were remarkable.” John McBeath, The Australian
“There is a lot of magic on Mace Francis’ recent album Land Speed Record… Francis’ writing never spends too much time gazing at its own navel. It flows instinctively because the writing and the playing have a lot of humanity – a lot of soul.” jazz-planet.com
