Kate Pass: Kohesia Ensemble
Wednesday 06 September 7.00pm
Kate’s love of Persian music began five years ago when she stumbled upon a performance by a group of local Persian musicians. Amazed by the unique sounding instruments, the use of microtones and improvisatory nature of the music, Kate immediately struck up a friendship with these musicians and began performing with them in several ensembles.
After immersing herself in Persian music for several years, Kate formed the Kohesia Ensemble as a platform for her original compositions. The ensemble explores aspects of the Persian modal system and combines the sounds of Persian flute (ney), percussion (daf) and oud with jazz instruments for a truly unique listening experience. With unusual time structures, microtones and soaring solo sections, this performance is not to be missed. Since forming, the ensemble has gone from strength to strength, receiving nominations for a Music Award at Fringe World Festival (2017) and for two WAM Song of the Year Awards (2017) for both the Jazz and World Music categories.
Comprising of a stellar line-up, the ensemble features Ricki Malet (trumpet) Marc Osborne (saxophone), Esfandiar Shahmir (daf, ney), Chris Foster (piano), Mike Zolker (oud), Daniel Susnjar (drums), Kate Pass (double bass) and special guest Reza Mirzaei (guitar, saz).
