I Wayan Bilion Dana - WAAPA Graduation Recital
Tuesday 20 November 8.00pm
An accomplished electric and double bassist, Wayan Dana grew up in Bali and moved to Australia at the age of 13. Wayan is very active on the contemporary, jazz and world music scenes in Perth. Tonight marks the culmination of four years of study at the WA Academy of Performing Arts where he has learned from some of Australia’s leading jazz artists and educators and formed lasting relationships with other young musicians. During his time at WAAPA, he has performed with such renowned jazz and pop musicians as Rai Thistlethwayte, Megan Washington, Guy Sebastian, James Morrison and The Rodriguez Brothers.
As a bassist, Dana is influenced by the likes of John Patitucci, Michael League, Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier and Dane Alderson. Wayan’s writing draws influence from a variety of western and non-western music styles. For this recital, he will seek to fuse jazz with genres such as Indonesian gamelan music, afro-roots and funk.
Aided by a band of skilled musicians, Wayan Dana hopes this will be an innovative and memorable performance.
