Funky Latin Grooves with Victoria Newton and Friends
Wednesday 17 October 7.00pm
Victoria has been serenading audiences for many years here in Perth, and spent the UK where she was recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic singers on the London jazz scene.
Victoria is a highly versatile musician moving effortlessly between jazz, contemporary and Brazilian jazz genres, the last of which Victoria fell in love with when she was studying jazz at WAAPA many moons ago.
This passion for Brazilian music continued to blossom when she moved to London when she became a member of Latin jazz bands, Cayenne and Samara. Several years later she had the opportunity to collaborate with UK saxophonist and composer, Paul Booth, and his original Brazilian band ‘Oxala’. This collaboration continued after Victoria relocated to Perth in 2008, and in 2014 Victoria recorded 5 songs on Paul Booth’s Patchwork Project, a recording which features a plethora of musical influences combining rhythms from Brazil, Peru, India and western grooves mixed with strong melodies and harmonies influenced by jazz, folk and popular song. This release of this CD culminated in two performances at the 2014 London International Jazz Festival.
Victoria also had a cheeky stint as a pop star in the mid 1990s with UK dance/pop group Strike and their massive hit ‘U Sure Do’. The success of this single followed by 4 UK top 40 hits and the critically acclaimed album ‘I Saw the Future’ saw a whirlwind of TV appearances including MTV and BBC’s Top of the Pops, and touring to many countries around the world. Victoria’s vocal performance on ‘I Saw the Future’ has been described as “outstanding throughout” (Dream Magazine) and her live performances “simply stunning”, with “staggering vocals” (M8 magazine).
She has recently returned from London town where she performed at some of her favorite venues including the renowned 606 Club.
Tonight Victoria will combine funky stylings of old and new with a few 90s classics, along with exquisite songs and a few surprises along the way.
The line up features some of Perth’s ridiculously talented musicians including:
Daniel Susnjar – drums
Karl Florrison – bass
Brodie Stewart – piano
Simon Jeans – guitar
Ricki Malet – trumpet
Marc Osbourne – saxes
Jeremy Greig – trombone
