If Australian multicultural music has a name, that name is an Eastwinds. Eastwinds is a six-piece band with members originating from far-flung corners of the globe – Estonia, Japan, Iran, Australia and England. Together they play a rich tapestry of sounds from old and new worlds drawing on traditions from the Baltic through the Balkans, from Persia to Perth, all driven by masterful didgeridoo playing, virtuosity on the evocative Persian end-blown flute the ney, and a keen devotion to improvisation. Call it world music, or perhaps just call it: a new geography of sound. Eastwinds has two WAM World Music nominations, a WAM Song of the Year award, and has spent much of the year touring in the Musica Viva music in schools program.
Lineup: Kristiina Maalaps (Estonia) vocals and jaw harp, Esfandiar Shahmir (ney and daf), Mark Cain (saxes, reeds, claritubes), Sanshi (digeridoo, cahon), Steve Barnes (bouzouki, guitar), Kieran Barnes (double bass).
