DSUS Afro-Peruvian Group plays the classic album “Soul of Black Peru”

Wednesday 25 September 7.00pm

The DSUS Afro-Peruvian Group is a multi award-winning 7 piece ensemble which has gained international recognition for its unique original compositions influenced by Afro-Peruvian rhythms, and fresh, unique arrangements of traditional Peruvian folk songs. Founded in 2011, the ensemble continually pushes forward with innovative ways to express artistic sensibilities from the Afro-Peruvian and Jazz musical traditions – collaborating with world class musicians including Grammy award-winning trumpeter Brian Lynch (Art Blakey), percussion legends Alex Acuña (Weather Report) and Sammy Figueroa (Miles Davis), and Peruvian cajon icon Freddy “Huevito” Lobaton.

For this special occasion,
the group will perform music exclusively from the album “Soul of Black Peru” – featuring classic Peruvian songs performed by music legends including Chabuca Granda, Nicomemedes Santa Cruz and Peru Negro. The album was compiled by David Byrne (Talking Heads) and was instrumental in catapulting renowned Peruvian singers Susana Baca and Eva Ayllon to new heights of international success. “Soul of Black Peru” is considered by many to be THE definitive Afro-Peruvian compilation album.

Special guest Lucy Iffla – a standout vocalist currently studying at WAAPA – will join the group for this special performance.

The DSUS Afro-Peruvian Group features:

Daniel Susnjar – drums/arrangements

Ricki Malet – trumpet

Luke Minness – saxophone

Harry Mitchell – piano

Jeremy Thomson – guitar

Zac Grafton – bass

Iain Robbie – percussion

Lucy Iffla– special guest vocalist

Combining infectious grooves, emotive melodies, risk-taking improvisation and extreme dynamics, the Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group “radiates a joyful energy that infects not just the band members but the entire auditorium” – Sydney Morning Herald
