Dave Smith Trio

David Smith was born in Sydney in 1954 and is essentially self-taught. He played in London from ’75-’79 at 100 Club, The Phoenix,White Hart, Action Space Centre and 606 Club with his own groups, as well as leaders Mike Osborne, John Stevens, Geof Castle and Paul Rogers.

David has played major Jazz venues, Festivals, Concert Halls, Hotels and Restaurants in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Freemantle, Queensland, Adelaide, and New Zealand. He has performed and recorded in Spain, and several times in New York with Jack Wilkins, Peter Leitch, Paul Bollenback, Chuck Wayne, Steve LaSpina, Jeff Hirshfield and several others.

Musical styles include standards, bebop, fusion, funk, mood music, contemporary, latin and original. His influences include Montgomery, Benson, Pass, McLaughlin, Evans, Parker and Coltrane.

David has performed on TV & radio, has taught at Perth Conservatorium, Sydney and NSW Universities, Sydney School Guitar, Aust Institute Of Music, Panov Academy, The Guitar Centre and many master classes. He has released four albums, is featured in “The Jazz Guitar”, “Jazz Guitar 2000″, “Just Jazz Guitar”, “Crescendo” and has done two books of Barney Kessel transcriptions for Hal Leonard USA and Ashley Mark UK.

His Band Mesh has performed at Manly Jazz Festival, Magnetic Island Festival, Shoalhaven Jazz, Kiama Jazz, Darlinghurst Festival, and Napier Festival in N.Z. David has done regular and casual gigs at The Regent, Basement Jazz, Soup Plus, Side On Cafe, The Basement, Satchmo’s, Lizotte’s, Harrigan’s, Master Builder’s Jazz Club, Strawberry Hills Hotel, The Rose, Three Weeds, Sapporo Jazz, The Annandale, Alfie & Hetty’s, Jimmy Blanco Bar, Lazy Bones, El Rocco, B.E.D Glebe and hundreds of other residencies and casuals throughout each year.

Recent TV appearances include The Arts Show and The Guitar Age on ABC. Highlights of 2005 included a three week tour performing at jazz festivals and doing master classes in N.Z with legendary New York guitarist Jack Wilkins. David has arranged and written charts and original tunes for various singers and ensembles. He has arranged and played music for radio and TV, arranges for and conducts jazz and pop ensembles at The Australian Institute Of Music and for the conservatorium. David has written, arranged and produced the music for seven CDs of Japanese vocalist Shu Sagusaki, performed on vocalist Kerry Sweenie’s CD, on two Kay Carter CDs, Michael Isaacs CD and two Sarah Martyn recordings.
