Thursday 20 August 7.00pm

Daniel Susnjar is a multi award-winning Western Australian drummer/composer/producer/educator known internationally for his expertise in the field of Afro-Peruvian Jazz. He has performed and recorded with music legends including Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Steve Miller, Terence Blanchard and Dave Grusin, and has toured throughout the USA, Peru, Australia, Asia and the Caribbean Islands. A former graduate of WAAPA’s highly esteemed jazz studies program, he is a longtime WAAPA staff member who has spent extended time studying, performing, recording and touring in the USA, earning a Grammy nomination for his work with Dave Grusin in 2010.

The WAAPA Mini Big Band features the cream of Western Australian young musical talent, showcasing up and coming Australian musicians set to make their artistic mark in the near future. The lineup includes vocalist Lucy Iffla, 6 horns, full rhythm section, plus 8 percussion – and will be certain to raise the roof for this special album launch celebration!

This LIVE ALBUM LAUNCH of “The Recipe” showcases Susnjar’s new exciting Afro-Peruvian Jazz works which were recorded in August 2019 by the WAAPA Big Mini Band – at the Edith Spiegelent to a capacity audience. Featuring a suite of music influenced heavily by coastal Peruvian rhythms (including the festejo, landó and zamacueca) this music will be sure to “radiate a joyful energy that infects not just the band members but the entire auditorium” – Sydney Morning Herald

Founded by Dr Daniel Susnjar in 2017, the WAAPA Afro-Peruvian Ensemble will be featured in the first set. The group features standout WAAPA students performing traditional Peruvian songs and using unique Peruvian instruments including the cajón, cajita and quijada.

A festive family evening of dynamic, passionate music not to be missed!
