Chris McNulty - Finding Home Project
Sunday 07 March 6.00pm
‘Finding Home’ is a 12 piece suite composed during my Bundanon Trust composer residency (2019) and throughout one of the most tumultuous years on record, 2020. The 12 pieces have been arranged to feature vocal ensemble and trio and draw from a multitude of musical influences from Wayne Shorter and Kenny Wheeler to Al Jarreau, Michael Brecker, Brazilian music, Michel Legrand, Burt Bacharach, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report. The music was originally conceived to bring musical voice to stories of refugees and immigrants through the lens of their artists. While these stories resonate powerfully throughout ‘Finding Home’ threads of my own journey also weave through this suite. Memories emerge from familial spaces and these kinds of stories are often held quietly in the heart until expressed or interpreted through our artists. The lyric storytelling of each piece gives listeners a glimpse into the extraordinary struggles humans endure to triumph over adversity, darkness and tragedy.
We hope to go into the recording studio to record ‘Finding Home’ with the addition of a full woodwind/vocal ensemble very soon.Joining me for this very first performance of ‘Finding Home’ will be Chris Foster, Nick Abbey and Michael Perkins along with guest vocalists, Georgina Aue and Owen Measday.
