Cathrine Summers presents Jazz Blues – Strong Women
Thursday 20 June 7.00pm
A spellbinding evening, paying special tribute to some of jazz and blues music’s strong female luminaries; renowned artists including Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson and more. An homage to their musical legacy with narrative of ups and downs, excesses, triumphs and tragedies of 40s and 50s jazz women in America.
Expect to be moved by chilling ballads, revel in infectious swing and be witness to powerful blues standards. Jazz Blues – Strong Women is brought to you by impassioned Perth vocalist Cathrine Summers, a celebrated international Perth-based singer known for her rich vocal timbre and broad range of incorporated musical stylings, and “instantly familiar” onstage persona – think Carmen McRae meets Amy Winehouse
Backing Cathrine will be a quartet of skilled local musicians, featuring musical director and pianist Brodie Stewart, Alistair Peel on double bass, Daniel Harrison on drums, and Marc Osborne on saxophone.
“With incredible vocal range, tender sense of comedy and comforting warm stage presence, it is as if the audience has known her for years. Cole Porter, once said, ‘I wanted every kind of love that was available, but I could never find them in the same person.’ Yet in the beautiful and talented Cotton Club singer, all these forms of love seem to coalesce.” - Perri Watson
