70s Blues, Folk & Soul with Lucy Iffla
Thursday 19 November 7.00pm
Well hello again! This November, this wonderful band will be returning to Ellington stage for a night of blues, folk and soul. Celebrating the best hits from Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, BB King and Sam Cooke! If you missed the chance to pop by last time, save the date! As you’ll be serenaded by the gorgeous voices of Ben Vanderwal and Matt Gudgeon supporting me as we go back in time to the 70s!
From an early age Lucy Iffla had a passion for diverse music ranging from David Bowie to Gretchen Parlato. Her love for music led her to completing a Bachelor of Music, specialising in Jazz at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. After years of cultivating her craft and playing alongside some of Perth’s top established musicians, Iffla developed her sound and showcases an elegant and timeless voice beyond her years.
Iffla’s love for jazz began when she came across her first Ella Fitzgerald vinyl. She found herself enamoured with the soulful sounds of Ella, the raspy tones of Anita O’Day and more locally the captivating textures of Perth musician, Allira Wilson.
At just 21, Iffla had the privilege of working with internationally renowned musicians at the New York University, most notably, Dave Pietro, Jay Anderson and Tom Scott. Along with participating in the NYU Jazz Summer Program in both Paris and New York, Iffla recently flew to Japan to perform alongside leading SHOWA University musicians with the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, which she has been a part of for 3 years.
Locally, she has had the honour of working with Perth’s finest, including Dr Daniel Sunsjar in his Afro Peruvian Ensemble and Quartet, Dr Jamie Oehlers in his Jazz Futures Band and Blowfish Ensemble, the all female Artemis Orchestra led by Gemma Pharrell, the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra led by Mace Francis, the Perth Symphony Orchestra and as a vocalist in many WAAPA ensembles. These incredible opportunities have challenged and taught her to sing in multiple languages with complex and varied rhythms, which has inspired her own original music.
Her love for unique and culturally diverse music, along with her love for composing will continue to grow. She often relates to Ella’s famous quote, “The only thing better than singing is more singing”.
After some time away she is back with wonderful musicians, Matt Gudgeon on Guitar, Alistair Peel on Bass and Ben Vanderwal (Drums), and a special guest (to be announced on the night!) creating an unforgettable powerhouse line-up.
We’d love to see you there to celebrate the return of live music in Perth!
